The New Year heralds the beginning of many bright & beautiful festivals across the vast lands of India. So, any guesses which festival are we talking about?

Well,‘The Kite Festival’ is on it’s way, Are you excited?

Firstly, let’s talk about why ‘Kite Festival’ is celebrated?

This festival has many names. It is also known as Makar Sankranti or Uttarayan in Gujarat. The jubilation of this festival is celebrated by people when winter begins to turn into summer..

It is also believed this day is a sign for farmers that the sun is back & the harvest season is soon approaching which is called Makar Sankranti. Hence, it is considered as one of the most important harvest day in India!!

Imagine—the beautiful blue skies are filled with colourful kites flying around & the laughter of the people ringing in the wind—La, La, La!

In fact, people from not only India, but all over the world gather to celebrate it!

1. Aapnu Amdavad, India

It is the city we would recommend you head into. In fact, book a place for yourself in advance (Preferably in the Khadia area). The tiny lanes called Pol with many heritage bungalows is a treat for all the Kite Flyers. In short, this city bursts into colour & vitality during the Kite Festival. When’re you going ?

2. Surat, India

How can we talk about Kite festivals and not mention surat in the list? Yes, you read it right. Surat will have its very own “International Kite Festival” on 10 of January at Sarita Sagar Sankul. The event will start at 9 till 4 and will give all surtis ample time to show and brush of your kite flying skills before Makar Sankranti.

3. Weifang, China

If you’ve never attended China’s Kite Festival ever, make your life’s mission to attend it this year in the month of April at Weifang. It attracts thousands of Kite Enthusiasts  from every corner of the country. It’s all about beautiful lanterns & colourful steamers!

4. Japan Kite Festival

If you love flying kites (Which we assume, you do!) then Japan Kite Festival is one hell of a Kite Festival that you should never miss out! The festival is set to take place in the first week of May in the city of Hamamatsu in Shizuoka Prefecture. The blue sky of the Great Sand Dune in the city changes to a colourful battlefield with people in amazing costumes flying kites-*Lovestruck*

5. Telangana International Kite Festival

TIKF is a family fun festival through the rich regional tapestry of kites, culture & crafts of Hyderabad & the Deccan. With 17 international Kite Flying Teams, night Kite Flying, Hyderabadi Food Festival, etc is worth a visit. You definitely don’t want to miss out on that now, do you?

6. Jaipur Kite Festival

It is considered as one of the most attended festivals in Rajasthan which is celebrated on 14th January every year. Right from sugary delights made of sesame seeds to the kites with light flown in the sky—The pink city celebrates it with zeal, gusto & enthusiasm!!

7. Jakarta Kite Festival, Indonesia

It’s one of the famous & oldest festivals of Indonesia. Slated in the month of July every year, which lasts for 2 days—we suggest you definitely go for this one. A huge dragon size Kite is also seen in the sky, which attracts many spectators!!

8. Gold Coast, Australia

9. Washington State International Kite Festival

One of the most popular & well known event in Long Beach Peninsula, North America which is conducted in the 3rd week of August every year. Voted as one of the best festivals by ‘Kite Trade Association International’—This festival is fully dedicated to art & science of world history of kites making the event completely worth it.
